The federal government has passed three relief bills in response to the economic crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Included in these bills are provisions to help family caregivers:

  • Direct payments to individuals and families—Individuals may receive up to $1,2000 and $500 per child, depending on your taxable income. https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus
  • Access to Food— Investments in food banks and CalFresh (SNAP) ensures access to food for the newly unemployed.
  • Housing— New protections for renters at both the federal and state level.
  • Emergency Paid Leave—If you become infected with COVID-19, you are eligible for two weeks of paid sick leave.
  • Unemployment Assistance— Additional money for unemployment is available for up to 13 weeks in addition to existing state coverage. Unemployment is now available to those who are self-employed or if you cannot work because childcare or senior care (including adult day care) has been impacted due to the pandemic.
  • Health Coverage— In addition, Californians who do not have health insurance can still enroll in Covered California. https://www.coveredca.com/
