Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15 – October 15

Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration in the United States that recognizes the contributions and influence of Hispanic/Latino Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of the US. Celebrated from September 15 to October 15, it begins on the anniversary of the independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile, and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period. Throughout the month, the diverse histories, cultures, and contributions of those whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America are highlighted and celebrated. It’s a time of reflection, pride, and recognition for Latino communities in the US.

There are many ways to participate in the celebration including eating the food of Spanish speaking countries, learning about Latino cultures, and honoring influential Latino people, who have contributed in ways that have helped this country grow and prosper.

Every day, Alzheimer’s Los Angeles celebrates the Latino community by working to create awareness about Alzheimer’s and other dementias in those communities of greater Los Angeles. We empower local families who are facing this disease by providing free programs and services in Spanish as well as in English.

How are Latinos affected by Alzheimer’s?

  • Research has shown that Latinos are disproportionately represented in the age group most at risk of Alzheimer’s disease (65 and older).
  • Latinos are at least 50% more likely than non-Latino whites to develop Alzheimer’s.
  • Alzheimer’s is the eighth-leading cause of death among Latinos. However, stigma, low levels of awareness, and misdiagnosis have likely led to underreporting of the disease.
  • The number of Latino adults suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementias could grow from an estimated 200,000 today to about 1.3 million by 2050.

Navigating the challenges of Alzheimer’s and other dementias requires both information and support. At Alzheimer’s Los Angeles, we’re dedicated to offering resources tailored to the needs of both Spanish and English-speaking communities. Whether you’re seeking educational content, care counseling, or resources, we have a variety of services designed to assist you during your journey.
