Josh’s Story

This Father’s Day, Josh Shares His Story
When my dad was diagnosed with dementia, I was the only immediate family member left to care for him. My mom had passed away years earlier, also from dementia, and my brother was gone too. It all fell on me. And it was completely overwhelming.
I knew I needed help, but I didn’t know where to turn. Then I called Alzheimer’s Los Angeles —and everything got better.
At first, I hesitated to reach out. I had worked in social services for years, and I thought I would be able to handle this on my own. But the reality of caregiving was exhausting, and I didn’t know what I didn’t know.
When I called Alzheimer’s LA, I spoke with Zina. She listened, calmed me down, and helped me figure out the next steps. She connected me with resources that made all the difference, including someone who helped me tour care facilities. I struggled with the idea of placing my dad, but Zina helped me realize it wasn’t selfish, it was actually selfless—he deserved the best care, and I deserved self-care. And it gave us both the chance for me to be his son again, instead of his caregiver.
After my dad moved to a care facility, I started attending an Alzheimer’s LA support group. That group became my lifeline. I found people who truly understood what I was going through; people who reminded me that I wasn’t alone. Over time, those connections helped me heal. Then something unexpected happened: I started helping others.
As a local nonprofit organization for more than 40 years, Alzheimer’s LA has been a refuge for countless LA families like mine who are facing Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Your gift ensures they can help guide families through every stage of the disease—from diagnosis to late-stage care.
Alzheimer’s LA didn’t just help me during a crisis—they’ve also been a constant support. Their Helpline offers up-to-date information, education, and emotional support. The care counselors provide personalized consultations to guide families through tough decisions. And the support groups create a safe space for caregivers to share challenges and find comfort.
What started as seeking support has come full circle for me. Today, I lead three support groups, offering the same guidance and reassurance that once meant everything to me. I see firsthand how critical these resources are. Families in crisis turn to Alzheimer’s LA every day, looking for answers, looking for hope.
I hear countless stories in my groups of caregivers doing everything on their own, running on fumes, with nowhere else to turn. Alzheimer’s LA is there for them, just like they were there for me.
That’s why your support is so important. Please make a gift today to help another caregiver find the relief and guidance they so desperately need. Every dollar you give stays right here in Los Angeles, ensuring families in our community have access to these life-changing programs. I can’t imagine what this journey would have been like without Alzheimer’s LA. I hope no one ever has to find out. Your support makes sure another family has a place to turn.
Thank you for your ongoing generosity. Alzheimer’s LA has meant so much to me and my family, and I know that with your help, they can continue to provide the care and comfort so many families rely on. Together, we can make sure no family faces Alzheimer’s alone.
With gratitude,

Caregiver and volunteer
